171 Calyer Street is a new multi-family residential and commercial building located in the Greenpoint Historic District. PKSB's design responds to the site's current context while recalling its architectural past. The building's street wall matches the neighboring three story rowhouses along a quiet residential stretch of Lorimer Street. The massing grows taller along Calyer Street where the soaring fly towers of the Greenpoint Theatre, a long-gone vaudeville house turned movie theatre, once stood. The chosen material palate of red brick, brown cast stone, and rust-colored simulated double hung windows reflects both the neighboring townhouses as well as a similarly scaled 6-story apartment house one block away.
